Maximilian I (also known as Maximilian Joseph) (27 May 1756 – 13 October 1825) was Duke of Zweibrücken from 1795 to 1799, Prince-Elector of Bavaria (as Maximilian IV Joseph) from 1799 to 1805, King of Bavaria (as Maximilian I) from 1806 to 1825. He was a member of the House of Palatinate-Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld, a branch of the House of Wittelsbach.

He would have been born as a Count Palatine of Zweibrucken-Birkenfeld, or in German Graf von Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld and 'von Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld' would be a more accurate LNAB
The German literature has used "von Wittelsbach" for members of the family as early as the 12th century, and if we stick with Wittelsbach, as unwieldy this may be, we might as well follow the German customs for this German family. But again, I have no problems doing away with Wittelsbach and using the different lines instead.
